Vanstone announces ATSIC replacement

Warren Mundine, junior vice president of the Australian Labor Party and one of the new members of the controversial National Indigenous Council.

Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Amanda Vanstone has announced the make-up of the 14 person appointed council to replace ATSIC, the National Indigenous Council (NIC).

The NIC will meet four times a year.

Its members are:

* West Australian magistrate,Sue Gordon (Chair of the NIC)

* ALP junior vice president, Warren Mundine

* Sydney Swans AFL player, Adam Goodes

* Founding member of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, South Australian Dr Archie Barton

* Brisbane-based Indigenous lawyer, Tammy Williams

* Dr John Moriarty, Sydney-based businessmen

* Chairwoman of the NT Aboriginal Benefits Account advisory committee, Miriam Rose Baumann

* Torres Strait Islander Joseph Elu, chairman of the Indigenous Business Australia

* Dr Sally Goold, Executive Director of the Congress of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander nurses, based in Queensland

* West Australian Joe Proctor, CEO of Indigenous Capital Limited

* Michael White, regional chair for ATSIC Central Queensland regional council

* Professor Mary Ann Bin-Sallik, Dean of Indigenous Research and Education at Charles Darwin University in the Northern Territory

* Northern Territory's Robert Lee, CEO of Jawoyn Association

* Wesley Aird, from Queensland, a member of the Eastern Yugambeh native title group

The NIC will have its first meeting early in December.
